Noah's Ark Sunday School Lesson

The following can be used as a Sunday school lesson, in the home or as part of a VBS. It was used during a three day VBS we called plans of peace.

The Lord saw how bad the earth had become. Everyone thought and did only evil things. He was sorry that he had even made them. But one man was different. He was good, he lived right and obeyed God. His name was Noah. God told Noah how to make an ark and how large to make it. He also told Noah what to make the ark out of. He said that he was going to send a flood to destroy everything that breathed. But he promised Noah that he and his family would be safe. God told Noah how many animals to put on the ark with him. It was a big job, getting the ark built, taking care of the animals and making sure to gather enough food for his family animals. Noah obeyed god anyway. God sent a rain that lasted 40 days and 40 nights. Only Noah and the others on the ark were saved. They had to wait a long, long time for the water to go away. But God did not forget about Noah or the others. God sent winds and the waters began to go down. One day Noah sent a dove out to see if it was safe to come out of the ark. If the dove came back it would not be safe yet. The dove came back holding an olive branch. Noah knew that this meant the water was going down but not down enough yet. He waited seven more days and when he sent the dove out this time, it did not come back. Noah knew that this meant the dove had stayed out to make a nest and that it was safe again now. God had kept his promise to Noah, he and all of his family and all of the animals had been kept safe. God had a plan for Noah's life and Noah had followed it.
These are examples of questions you might ask after the story:
1. What kinds of animals do you think were on the ark with Noah?
2. How many days and nights did the rains (flood) last?
3. What kind of bird did Noah send out to see if it was safe to come out?

The verse that we used to go with this story was,
" For I know the plans that I have for you," declares the Lord,"plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you a hope and a future." Jeremiah 29:11
