Chick flicks and why we love them

when sappiness serves a purpose

I am sitting at home right now watching Failure to Launch with my husband. It is a strange occurrence. Chick flicks are not generally well accepted in our home. My husband, like most men I'm sure, has a really strong dislike for the genre. I guess I don't blame him, chick flicks are, well, sappy. And they don't depict a realistic view of life -ok most films aren't realistic, but chick flicks take it to a whole new level. Most girls I know were not serenaded by the guy trying to win their heart. Most guys don't look deep into a girl's eyes and tell them everything that is special and wonderful about them, and why they can't live without them. But I don't blame chick flicks for this, maybe more guys should do this. The guys in these films aren't trying to look too macho to love, they are open and caring and not afraid to show what they feel. Maybe if more guys did this in real life girls would not need to watch chick flicks so often. They definitely fill a void. I'm not in any way trying to bash chick flicks. When I am sad there is nothing that helps like a chick flick. Many a broken heart in my day have been healed while holing myself up with a good supply of chick flicks and copious amounts of ice cream. A week later I'd emerge, out of tears and ready to face the world again. Sometimes you just need a good trigger for all that emotion your trying to keep inside. Sometimes you just want to watch movies because they relate to what your going through. Before I got married I watched every chick flick about weddings I could find. Father of the Bride,My Best Friend's Wedding, The Wedding Planner and funnily enough, Runaway Bride were on a continuous loop. Sometimes you have a stand by chick flick that's your go to when everything isn't as sunny as you'd like. My go to is Breakfast at Tiffany's. Every girl who likes chick flicks has one. A good way to get a glimpse of the women's heart whom you love is to ask what her favorite chick flick of all time is. This movie is usually a good indicator of who she sees herself as or how she wishes to be treated, or maybe something that she's gone through. Don't try to break your girl of chick flicks, they serve their role, they may be deeply personal to them. You might even watch their favorite with them and pay attention to what pulls their heart strings. I do realize that there are women out there that say they don't like chick flicks. I think that's kind of sad. It points to in my eyes at least, a giving up of hope. It is the main ingrediant  of these movies after all, hope. Hope that love is real and someone thinks you are worthy of love, a reminder to show those you love how you feel too. I think all of us would benifit from remembering to do that too.
